Bench Press 101

*information obtained from Becoming a Supple Leopard by Dr. Kelly Starrett with Glen Cordoza

The problem with today’s bench press is that athletes and coaches generallty put more stock in how much weight was lifted than in how well the movement was perfomed. The question asked by all gym-goers is “How much do ya bench”? when in reality the question should be “How good is your bench press form”?

Just like squat and deadlift, you have to account for a lot of variables.

  1. Setting your shoulders in a good position
  2. bracing while lying on your back
  3. maintaining an ideal bar path takes a lot of practice and technical ability
