Good Cholesterol vs Bad Cholesterol

Cholesterol (medicine plus.gov) Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that’s found in all the cells in your body. Your body needs some cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help you digest foods. Your body makes all the cholesterol it needs.

High-density lipoprotein (Good Cholesterol) in high amounts is thought to lower the risk of coronary artery disease, by picking up excess cholesterol in the blood and taking it back to the livers where’s it’s broken down.

  • Nuts
  • Legumes
  • Beans

Low-density lipoprotein in high amounts can slowly build up the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. With other substances, it can form plaque ( which is a thick, hard deposit) that can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible.
